The opposition groups called on people trapped inside the city to create their own no-fly zone by burning tires to throw off Syrian regime fighter jets

Syrian rebel groups are calling the launch of a major offensive against pro-regime forces in Aleppo the largest in the “history of the Syrian revolution.”

On Sunday the campaign began to break the siege imposed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army and its allies of opposition-held parts of the northern city, and according to statements made by rebels, to try to liberate the entire city.

With the failure by the international community to impose a no-fly zone over Syria to date, prominent social media accounts of the Syrian opposition are calling on people inside Aleppo to make their own no-fly zone by burning tires to put off Syrian fighter jets bombing the city. Facebook and Twitter pages affiliated with the Syrian opposition called for a “no-fly zone uprising” across the country, but especially in Aleppo, Vocativ found. Other accounts uploaded images and video showing children burning tires and clouds of smoke covering the city. “After the Muslim community failed to support the Syrian revolution with an anti-aircraft weapon, the cubs of Syria announce a no-fly zone over Aleppo by making a smoke screen,” tweeted one user who uploaded an image allegedly showing a young Syrian man carrying tires.
